(BLOOMINGTON) - Coffee with a Cop is a movement designed to help break down the barriers between law enforcement and community members.

Coffee with a Cop provides an opportunity for officers and citizens to get together, share a cup of coffee, and discuss problems and issues that often go unaddressed or unresolved.

Coffee with a Cop was created in Hawthorne, California in 2011 as a result of a brainstorming session to help officers interact on a more personal level with the community. Bloomington Police Chief Mike Diekhoff embraced the concept and, in 2015, started our own program in Bloomington, Indiana.

Chief Diekhoff said "This is a great way for officers to meet with the community members. We encourage people to
bring their kids, meet officers and spend time learning about what we do."

There were three events held that first year and the response from the community was amazing. In 2016, BPD held 10 events including participating in the first annual National Coffee with a Cop event. There have been eight events so far in 2017. On Wednesday, October 4th , BPD will once again participate in the National Coffee with a Cop event
from 10 a.m. - noon.at Harley-Davidson of Bloomington.

BPD's Coffee with a Cop events are held in conjunction with local business and community centers throughout the city to encourage participation. The times and dates of the events also vary to give citizens and officers a variety of opportunities to participate.

Past sponsors of the event are:

  • Kroger
  • Lucky Supermarkets
  • Hyatt Hotels
  • College Mall
  • Banneker Community Center
  • Monroe County Public Library
  • Bloomington Elks
  • Southern Hills Church of Christ
  • Chick-fil- A
  • Hanapin Marketing
