Washington Man Killed After Being Struck By Vehicle, Driver Arrested

(WASHINGTON) - An early Sunday morning traffic accident took the life of an elderly Washington man.

Washington City Police report 78-year-old Joseph Yerkes of Washington was pronounced dead at the scene of the hit and run accident.

The accident was reported around 4:56 a.m. on State Street near the intersection with East National Highway.

Washington Police Chief Todd Church says, Yerkes, who lived in the neighborhood, routinely took walks in the early morning hours.

After the accident, the driver, 29-year-old Ryan Wiscaver, fled the scene. He was later located thanks to a joint effort of several police agencies and arrested on a preliminary charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He is being held without bond in the Daviess County Security Center.
