Spring Mill State Park Stocked With Channel Catfish

Last updated on Friday, September 29, 2017

(MITCHELL) - The Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife stocked Spring Mill Lake with 440 channel catfish Tuesday. The catfish were raised at East Fork Fish Hatchery in Daviess County and brought to the lake by workers from Driftwood Fish Hatchery in Vallonia.

The fish are between 10 and 15 inches in length. There is no minimum length harvest, but there is 10 bag limit.

Channel catfish have a top-end size of about 40-50 pounds. The world record channel catfish weighed 58 pounds.

They can be caught using a variety of natural and prepared baits. When removing the hook from a catfish, anglers should be mindful of the sharp spines on the pectoral and dorsal fins.

This spring officials stocked the lake with 750 rainbow trout, but according to surveys done by fishermen and the number of trout stamps purchased in Lawrence County most of those fish were likely gone by June.

The lake will be restocked with trout in the spring and more catfish again next fall.
