Retirement Community Officials Respond To Wastewater Release

Last updated on Tuesday, September 5, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - Officials from the Meadowood Retirement Community in Bloomington have remediated the situation after an undetermined amount of wastewater was recently released into the watershed from a source on the retirement community’s property.

A follow-up investigation determined the likely source of the wastewater was a malfunctioning private lift station on the Meadowood property.

Meadowood officials followed the proper protocol in this matter, including notifying the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Meadowood staff also worked closely with the City of Bloomington Utilities in their response.

"I instructed CBU staff to inspect the lift station, and to televise several sanitary sewer lines on their property, to determine if there were any other issues beyond the problem with the lift station," said CBU Director Vic Kelson. "The televising indicated a problem with a sanitary sewer line flowing into the lift station. Meadowood officials were extremely cooperative in the follow-up process."

Necessary repairs to the lift station in question and the sanitary sewer line are expected to be completed by early this week.
