(MITCHELL) - Officials from Orange County REMC dedicated a new solar array on State Road 37 in Mitchell that will turn sunshine into electricity for homes and businesses throughout Orange County REMC service area.
The 3,900-panel array is capable of generating one megawatt, enough electricity to power about 150 homes annually as the panels rotate east to west to follow the sun.
Orange County REMC worked with Hoosier Energy, the electric cooperative's power supplier, to identify a prime location for the array.
"As a cooperative, our focus is always local," said Matt Deaton, CEO of Orange County REMC, which serves more than 7800 members in Orange and parts of Lawrence, Martin, Crawford and Washington counties. "Thanks to this project, we are in a better position to learn how to best tap into the power of the sun and bring renewable energy to our members," he added.
The solar array is the eighth in a 10-site solar project that is part of Hoosier Energy's "all-of-the-above" power supply strategy to further the cooperative commitment of affordability, reliability and community for its membership and the consumers they serve.
