Flu Vaccinations Available At IU For Faculty, Staff, Students

(BLOOMINGTON) - To help you stay healthy during flu season, most IU campuses are offering vaccines to faculty, staff and students.

Not sure you should get a flu shot? Consider these facts from the director of Student Health Services at IUPUI, Stephen Wintermeyer:

Flu shots are the single best way to protect oneself against the flu, or influenza. The flu infects millions of Americans each year, resulting in over 200,000 hospitalizations and an average of 24,000 deaths.
Getting a flu shot protects yourself but also those around you who may be particularly vulnerable to the flu. Groups that are highest risk from the flu include the elderly, infants and those with chronic medical conditions. If you regularly interact with such people, you can help protect them by getting a flu shot.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all Americans older than 6 months get a flu vaccine each year, unless they have had a severe allergic reaction to the flu vaccine or one of its components in the past. Please note that some types of flu vaccine are produced now without the use of eggs, so there is no reason for those with an egg allergy not to get a flu shot.

Flu shot clinics will be available at the following campus locations:

Oct. 3: 9 to 11 a.m. at the Maurer School of Law, Room 001
Oct. 3: 2 to 4 p.m. in Poplars, Room 185
Oct. 4: 11 a.m to 1 p.m. at the School of Optometry, Room 108
Oct. 17 to 19: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the IU Health Center main lobby
Oct. 24: 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Facilities Building and Architect's Office's Davis Conference Room
Oct. 24: 2 to 4 p.m. in the Kelley School of Business and SPEA north lobby
Oct. 25: 9 to 11 a.m. in the Kelley School of Business and SPEA north lobby
Oct. 25: 2 to 4 p.m. in the School of Education atrium
Oct. 26: 2 to 4 p.m. in the Cyberinfrastructure Building main lobby
Nov. 8: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the IU Health Fair in the Indiana Memorial Union

All IU employees, graduate appointees, fellowship recipients and retirees under the age of 65 covered by an IU-sponsored medical plan can receive the immunization at no cost by showing a valid medical plan ID card. The cost is $37 for employees not covered by an IU medical plan. Clinic sites are by check only. Spouses, partners and children of employees are not eligible to attend these clinics.
