Fake and Offensive Poster And Apparent Phishing Attempt On IU Campus

Last updated on Tuesday, September 26, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - A fake IU poster mocking sexual assault has been posted on the IU Bloomington campus and shared on social media.

This poster is deliberately provocative in order to entice people to follow the website link at the bottom of the poster.

The posters were found in bathroom stalls, at the School of Public Health, the Fine Arts Building and the Indiana Memorial Union.

Police advise the public not to use the URL at the bottom of the post or poster. The URL has been tested by the IT Security Office. The testing indicated the site may be malicious. Access to the site has been blocked on the IU network in order to protect users from malware or other malicious activities.

Lori Reesor, Ph.D., Vice Provost for Student Affair says they are working directly with the IU Police Department to investigate this situation. Please contact IUPD at (812) 855-4111 if you see the posters placed in any physical locations on campus.

Reesor says: sexual assault is not a laughing matter. Sexual assault is an endemic issue facing college students nationwide, and one that we are actively trying to eradicate from our campus and community.

Officials recognize that the information on these posters may be deeply upsetting for some students. Help is available through the Confidential Victim Advocates in the Office for Sexual Violence Prevention and Victim Advocacy, available by phone at (812) 856-2469 or by emailing cva@indiana.edu. CVAs provide assistance to students who have experienced sexual violence by helping with academic concerns, connecting them with resources, and helping file reports.

The IU Health Center offers counseling services and a 24-hour crisis line available through the Sexual Assault Crisis Service. For immediate assistance or to schedule an appointment, call 812-855-8900. Find more information about Indiana University's sexual misconduct policy, resources available, and help with filing a report online or through Title IX offices at stopsexualviolence.iu.edu.
