(HOBBIEVILLE) - An early morning crash Friday on I-69 resulted in the death of a Bloomington man.

Indiana State Troopers from the Bloomington Post were called to the 100 Mile Marker on I-69 just after 2 a.m. Friday morning to investigate a single vehicle crash.

Troopers discovered that a 2002 Ford Explorer was southbound on I-69 after having been reported as being driven by a possibly impaired driver.

The Explorer had struck a guardrail twice and drove into the median multiple times. Troopers found evidence that led them to believe the Explorer had been driven at a high-rate of speed and had left the side of southbound I-69, partially into the median. The Explorer then struck the end of a guardrail just south of the 100 Mile Marker with the impact resulting in heavy debris, including ripping off the driver's door. The Explorer then continued southbound along the guardrail for approximately 200 feet where the driver was ejected into the median. The vehicle finally came to rest against the bridge wall, partially in the left travel lane.

The driver 54-year-old Fred M. Thompson of Bloomington was transported to IU Health Bloomington, but died as a result of his extensive injuries.

Toxicology results are pending.

Agencies assisting at the scene were - Greene County Sheriff Department, Monroe County Sheriff Department, Monroe County Coroner, Greene County Volunteer Fire Department, Sgt. Greg Day ISP, Sgt. Eric Russell ISP, IU Health Bloomington Ambulance Service.
