Dubois County High School Students Invited To Enter DAR Essay Contest

Last updated on Wednesday, September 27, 2017

(DUBOIS) - The Dubois County Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution invites all Dubois County high school students to enter the 2017-2018 Christopher Columbus Essay Contest.

Students are invited to submit an essay of 800 to 1,200 words on the topic,"Advantages and Disadvantages of Working Relationships Between Foreign Parties." Christopher Columbus, an Italian, managed to convince a Spanish monarch to fund his voyage. Essays are to discuss the reasons why a monarch from one country would be interested in hiring an explorer from a foreign country to complete such an important mission. What convinced the Spanish monarchy to support Christopher Columbus instead of Spanish explorers?

The deadline to submit entries is October 31, 2017. A county-wide winner will be chosen and then forwarded on for state competition, and state winners will then compete at the national level. First, second, and third-place national winners will be selected after judging by the National Italian American Foundation. To qualify for first place, the winner must be able to go to Washington, D.C., in October 2018 to read his or her winning essay at the National Columbus Celebration. The first-place national winner receives $1,200 from the NIAF in addition to paid lodging and transportation to Washington, D.C., in October of 2018 for the winner and one parent or guardian. The second-place national winner receives $500, and the third-place national winner receives $300.

Since 1996, the NSDAR has joined with the National Italian American Foundation to sponsor an annual national essay contest on Christopher Columbus. The contest is open to students in grades nine through 12 in public, private, or parochial schools, or those who are homeschooled. This contest is conducted without regard to race, religion, sex, or national origin.
