City of Bloomington To Celebrate Fiesta Del Otoño In Recognition Of National Hispanic Heritage Month

Last updated on Thursday, September 14, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Community and Family Resources Department will host Fiesta del Otoño (Fall Festival) on Saturday, September 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 through October 15. This family-friendly celebration will be held in conjunction with the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market at the Showers City Hall Plaza, 401 N. Morton Street.

The theme of Fiesta del Otoño 2017 is "Muchas Culturas, Muchas Historias" which translates to "Many Cultures, Many Stories." Muchas Culturas, Muchas Historias is a declaration about sharing our cultures and telling our stories in order to build trust and ensure a thriving community. "Being surrounded by different cultures has given me the opportunity to not only learn more about myself but others," says Maria Yadira Gutierrez, Chair of the IU Latino Enhancement Cooperative. "I would like the community to know that in order to be in touch with your inner roots and culture you have to learn how to appreciate the stories and traditions of others."

Residents, visitors, and guests will be treated to a host of educational and cultural entertainment, including a live performance of "Viajera del Rio," a romance song from Bolivar, Venezuela; dancing to "Jesusita en Chihuahua," a Mexican polka song, a trademark of the Mexican Revolution; a dance competition with a prize of a $250 gift card from the Foxhole; a children's station with face painting and other activities; and food and tabling by several of our community partners and organizations.

Fiesta del Otoño is a partnership between the City of Bloomington Community and Family Resources Department and Indiana University Latino Enhancement Cooperative.
