Bloomington Man Facing New Charges After Injuring Jailer

Last updated on Thursday, September 21, 2017

(NASHVILLE) - A Bloomington man serving time in the Brown County jail is facing new charges after he assaulted a jail officer.

Brown County Police say that on August 5th, 30-year-old Robert Gilman was placed on lockdown in the jail for not obeying jail staff and rules. Gilman told the jail staff he had possibly broken his hand after he punched a cell door. Emergency Medical staff responded to the jail and suggested Gilman be taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for x-rays. He was treated and returned to the jail about three hours later wearing a soft cast on his right wrist.

As a jail officer was returning Gilman to his call he refused to cooperate. Nashville Police were called to assist. Gilman continued to resist and tried to kick the cell door. He was placed in the cell. He then began screaming and banging his head off the cell doors

According to court document, officers watch Gilman on video camera repeatedly running his head into the wall with "extreme force."

Jail officers entered the cell to place Gilman in a padded cell so he could not injure himself.

When they entered, Gilman got into a fighting stance. Officers began to restrain Gilman and that is when he got his arm free and elbowed one of the officer.

Gilman was then wrestled to the ground and placed in a restraint chair in a padded cell. He then scooted the chair to one of the locks in the cell and began banging his head on the lock.

Police charged Gilman last week with a Level 5 felony charge of battery resulting in bodily injury to a public safety officer.

Gilman was serving a year sentence on charges including domestic battery, battery resulting in bodily injury. He was then charged in May on a felony battery charge after he seriously injured another inmate in a fight.
