Bedford Man Arrested After Vandalizing Needmore Elementary School

Last updated on Wednesday, September 13, 2017

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after Lawrence County Police say he vandalized property at Needmore Elementary School and injured a woman in two separate incidents.

Police arrested 30-year-old Tyler Richison of Bedford on two Level 6 felony charges of battery and criminal mischief. He is being held in the Lawrence County Jail with two bonds - both set at $7,500 surety or $755 cash.

Police say that on August 14th Needmore Elementary School Principal Wendy Butterfield reported vandalism to a bench at the school.

Police say security video showed that Ritchison drove his white truck into the parking lot and unloaded a bicycle and began riding it on the sidewalk and onto a limestone bench in front of the school. He then rubbed red wax on the bench so the bike would slide across the top of the bench.

Officials estimate the damages to the bench at "several thousand dollars."

Police interviewed Ritchison on August 19th after he discovered police were wanting to talk to him. He told them he put wax on the bench "that it didn't mess up."

In the second offense - on August 24th a woman reported that Ritchison had hurt her in the presence of children.

The woman says Ritchison had grabbed the woman's arm and took a pack of cigarettes from her shirt causing bruising and pain.
