(BEDFORD) - A Bedford Police Department officer was placed on unpaid administrative leave today pending the outcome of a criminal investigation by Indiana State Police.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, the investigation stems from Eddie Allen mishandling evidence - the theft of cash.

Allen has been an officer with the department for almost 7 years.

Chief Parsley requested Allen be put on unpaid administrative leave during a Bedford Board Of Works special meeting held this afternoon after telling the board members Indiana State Police had a video recording to back up the allegations of theft. Chief Parsley reviewed the video and immediately placed Allen on paid administrative leave and then request a special meeting with the Board of Works.

In a press release, Chief Parsley says the department has opened an internal investigation to determine which if any rules or regulations of the department Allen violated. Chief Parsley says Indiana Code prevents any further action by the department until the investigation is complete.

"The Department takes such an allegation very seriously and will cooperate fully with the investigating agency. Although further comment would be inappropriate at this stage of the investigation it is our intention to be as transparent as the law allows in this unfortunate situation. We are determined to maintain the high standards the community expects of its police officers," Chief Parsley wrote.
