AT&T Boosts Game Day Coverage In Memorial Stadium At IU

Last updated on Tuesday, September 26, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - AT&T* has boosted its mobile internet coverage in Memorial Stadium at Indiana University. When a big play happens this season, football fans can enjoy stronger connections as they share the moment with friends and family.

To upgrade the network, AT&T added 80 percent more capacity to the Distributed Antenna System (DAS). This is like adding more lanes to a highway, resulting in less network congestion and more reliable service. This gives customers a better wireless experience at the game.

"Hoosier football fans love to celebrate their team, and this season will surely have plays that they'll want to share through social media, calls and texts," said Dave Jent, IU associate vice president of networks. "This network improvement by AT&T will allow IU fans to connect in ways that will help create lifetime memories, and we appreciate the additional investment."

Fans at Memorial Stadium used an average of 587 GB of mobile data per game on AT&T's in-venue mobile network last season. That's equivalent to 1.6 million social media posts with photos per home game.

"When our customers head to Memorial Stadium to cheer on their favorite team, we want them to have a great network experience. We've improved the network so they can easily post selfies to social media, text friends, make a call, or look up stats," said Bill Soards, president of AT&T Indiana. "We're continuing to invest in our wireless network to help customers at Memorial Stadium stay connected."

A DAS is made of numerous, small antennas that distribute wireless network coverage. It shortens the distance a call or text must travel. Calls, texts and posts are less likely to get stuck in a "traffic jam" of other calls, texts and posts.

AT&T also enhanced the network at Memorial Stadium last year with added capacity, helping lead to a large increase in data usage season over season. Fans at Memorial Stadium used an average of 215 GB of mobile data per game on AT&T's in-venue mobile network during the 2015 season. That's equivalent to more than 615K social media posts with photos.

AT&T has invested nearly $1.7 billion in its wireless and wireline networks in Indiana between 2014 through 2016. This drives upgrades to reliability, coverage, speed and performance for residents and business customers.
