(BEDFORD) - Two women were injured after the driver of the vehicle attempted to avoid striking a deer on River Road Monday night.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 23-year-old Kassandra Mundy of Mitchell was traveling west-southwest on Tunnelton Bono Road, near Tunnelton Bono Road in a 1998 Chevrolet pickup when she saw a deer near the roadway and swerved the truck to avoid hitting it.

Police say this action caused the truck to run off the north side of River Road. After running off the road, the truck traveled up an embankment. At some point the truck rolled and stopped upright. The truck then spun to face east-northeast and eventually came back onto River Road. Mundy then moved the truck to the side of the road to remove the truck from the roadway.

When police were notified about the crash they were told no one was injured.

But when officers arrived at 7:48 p.m. they found Mundy and her passenger Allyssan Beatty, of Jasper, out of the vehicle. Beatty was sitting on the side of the road next to the truck having trouble breathing. Mundy had blood on the side of her neck and complained of a bump on her head.

Beatty had been partially ejected from the rear window of the extended-cab pickup.

Police called for medical assistance. An IU Health Hospital ambulance and Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department first responders responded.

Both told police they were not wearing their seat belts and the airbags did not deploy.

Mundy told police she was traveling around 45 miles per hour on the gravel road when the accident happened.

Both women were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Before being transported Mundy was given a blood-alcohol test which she passed.

Police cited both women for not wearing their seat belts. Mundy told police her insurance on the truck had recently expired.
