(BEDFORD) - Dr. George Sorrells was honored by officials at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.
Sorrells has spent 55 years caring for the youth of Lawrence County so it was only fitting for the nursery in the who hospital's obstetrics unit be dedicated in his name.
Dr. Sorrells graduated with honors from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1962 and specializes in pediatrics and adolescent Medicine.
Sorrells, 79, is dedicated to his patients. He goes to the office every day. He doesn't keep the hours he did at the peak of his career (arriving at 7 a.m. and staying until 8 p.m. or later during cold and flu season) but he is just a phone call away accessible to his patients 24 hours. He never considers those late night or early morning calls an intrusion.
"I was treating a young one with a broken arm this morning, doing all the necessary things that needed done as a pediatrician," he added. "As long as my health and mental health stays I will not stop. I will have to slow down some but that comes with age...Plus my wife wouldn't know how to deal with me if I was home all the time and she is a wonderful woman."
Sorrells was honored beyond words.
"I can never repay this community for the trust and confidence they placed with me to take care of their most precious possessions - their children. It is an honor," Sorrells says. "There are a lot more people who have helped the children of this community through the years. I am humbled....gosh it is such an honor and I had know idea it was coming."
Sorrells says he will miss bringing new lives into this world.
"I can't even count the number of babies I have delivered or newborns I have seen," he added. "I couldn't begin to tell you... There were so many I can't count that high. There were some sad times, but many many wonderful happy times. It was my pleasure."
Sorrells says the dedication was humbling.
"I never expected this," he added. "I don't know why they picked me.. but I am deeply honored."
