(INDIANAPOLIS) - Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) hosted its third annual Microelectronics Integrity Meeting (MIM) at the Crowne Plaza Downtown last Tuesday and Wednesday.
Approximately 230 professionals from government, academia and industry attended the event, which included keynote speeches from Kerry Bernstein of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and Dr. Edward Ammeen, the Marine Engineering Director for Naval Systems Engineering Directorate of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).
"Trusted electronics is not an issue that's going to go away, and it's not a problem the Navy and Department of Defense (DoD) is going to solve on its own," said Brian Stuffle, NSWC Crane's Flight System Division Manager. "The MIM offers us an opportunity to bring a community of interest together to talk about some of the problems associated with the integrity of microelectronics, and to propose some solutions as to how we can utilize the tools and the knowledge we have to combat those problems."
The MIM held focused panel discussions on workforce development challenges, supply chain risk management, counterfeit detection, academic cyber challenges, and human factors engineering.
One panel featured five PhDs from Indiana University for a view from academia on the challenges the U.S. Navy and the DoD face in regard to electronics. A separate panel consisting of Judi See from Sandia National Laboratory and Steve Rusinko of Draper Laboratory discussed aspects of strategic parts program planning that should be considered to account for impacts by human factors.
Additionally, there were a number of counterfeit mitigation displays and demonstrations during a poster session at the end of the MIM's first day.
"Meetings like this create a forum for building collaborative relationships that we need to stay in front of threats, both now and in the future," said Ben Harkness, NSWC Crane's Director of Global Deterrence and Defense Department.
NSWC Crane is a naval laboratory and a field activity of NAVSEA. The warfare center is responsible for multi-domain, multi- spectral, full life cycle support of technologies and systems enhancing capability to today's warfighter.
