(BROWNSTOWN) - A family escaped from a burning home thanks to the help of their grandson.
According to firefighters, 22-year-old Skylar Thompson was able to save his grandparents and their two dogs from their burning home on Thursday night near Brownstown.
Thompson told firefighters he was on his computer working on some courses for the Army around 11:15 p.m. at the modular home he shares with his grandparents at 2063 State Road 39 South when he heard popping sounds coming from the refrigerator and smelled smoke.
He ran outside and found smoke coming from his bedroom at one end of the home. He went back inside, opened the bedroom door and found the room engulfed in flames. He then woke his grandmother, 59-year-old Wanda Holman, who was asleep in the living room and then rushed to the master bedroom and woke his grandfather, 65-year-old Robert Holman.
After getting his grandparents and their two dogs out of the home, he dialed 911.
Thompson was scheduled to leave for the Army on Friday.
Browntown Volunteer Fire Department responded with the assistance of Driftwood, Grassy Fork, Jackson-Washington and Crothersville-Vernon townships. Jackson County Emergency Medical Services personnel also were on the scene.
One firefighter from Jackson-Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department was taken to the emergency room from possible smoke inhalation.
The last firefighters left the scene at about 5:30 a.m. Friday but were called back at 7:30 a.m after the fire rekindled.
Firefighters believe the fire was electrical in nature.
