(BLOOMINGTON) - Medications can help people live longer, healthier lives, but they can also cause harm. Learn tips on how to safely track medications and common negative side effects at the next Caregiver University session from 10 - 11 a.m. on Aug. 21, at the Monroe County Public Library.

Courtney Stewart of Purdue Extension Monroe County will speak about medication safety and how to talk to a doctor about medication changes.

The Alzheimer's Resource Service, a service of IU Health Community Health Bloomington, in partnership with Purdue Extension of Monroe County, offers Caregiver University sessions at no cost. Register online at cpl.evanced.info/signup/Calendar.

"Caregiver University typically focuses on dementia-related topics," said Dayna Thompson, MS, LMHC of the Alzheimer's Resource Service. "Medication safety is important for people living with dementia and their caregivers, but it's also important for everyone else. We invite all interested community members to attend this workshop."

The last four Caregiver University sessions for 2017 in Monroe County will cover:

Teepa's GEMS: Using Skills That Make a Difference | 1 - 3 p.m., Sept. 13

This workshop offers an overview of Teepa Snow's dementia classification model. Each stage is compared to a gem and focuses on strengths and abilities, along with changes in each state. There is an emphasis on understanding abilities, adjusting expectations, modifying cues and support, and improving communication and "hand on" care to meet ever-changing needs.

Hands-On Skills for the Family Caregiver | 10 a.m. - noon, Oct. 20

This session will enhance simple hands on care skills, including first-aid, how to help someone up from a fall, tips on transferring someone from sitting to standing, and other day-to- day tasks.

Enhancing Communication Within the Family | 1 - 3 p.m., Nov. 15

Sometimes providing support for your loved one is not the most stressful part of caregiving. Even the most motivated and well-meaning families have conflict at one time or another. Join us to build skill in increasing positive communication within the family.

Managing Holiday Stress | 10 - 11 a.m., Dec. 11

The holidays can be a stressful time; even more so when caregiving is part of the picture. Learning to take care of yourself is key during this hectic time of year. Join us to learn stress management techniques and to take some time for you.
