(DUBOIS CO.) - A Ferdinand man accused of murder and rape pleaded guilty in Dubois Circuit Court Wednesday in a plea deal.

According to court records, 26-year-old Kyle Popplewell pled guilty to the murder of Jeffrey Perry, criminal confinement and aggravated battery. He will be sentenced on September 8th at 1 p.m.

The plea agreement removes the potential for a life sentence without parole. Popplewell would face 65 years with the Indiana Department of Corrections for the murder count; six years for the criminal confinement; and 15 years for the amended aggravated battery count.

Those charges stem from an incident January 10, 2016 in which Popplewell allegedly entered the home of 37-year-old Jeffrey D. Perry, located east of St. Henry. Police say Popplewell stabbed Perry as he slept on a couch. Perry died from his injuries. Popplewell then slashed Perry's girlfriend who attempted to stop him from injuring Perry. Popplewell then barricaded himself in a bedroom of the home with Perry's adult foster daughter who was staying at the home. While barricaded in the room, he allegedly raped the woman multiple times during a three-hour police standoff. He then surrendered to police.
