Fans Asked To Arrive Early For IU/Ohio State Football Game

Last updated on Thursday, August 31, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University will kick off the 2017 season facing No. 2 Ohio State. Kickoff is 8 p.m. and those around the IU program are calling it the most significant season opener in team history. Stadium gates will open at 5:30 p.m. because of increased security measures.

It has been 35 years since the Hoosiers began the season with a conference matchup, and it is the first time in team history the Buckeyes are coming to Bloomington to open the season.

ESPN's flagship show, College GameDay, will host a special night edition, as it will broadcast live inside Memorial Stadium from 6-8 p.m. This will be College GameDay's first visit to Bloomington in their 24 years of on-site broadcasting. IU will display today's episode on the new 78-foot-wide video board mounted above the north end zone complex.

Officials are asking fans to arrive early for the sold out game. That means 52,929 people will be converging on Memorial Stadium this evening.

Parking lots around IU will be open 12 hours before kickoff - people who have not bought a parking pass will have to park elsewhere because the spaces are sold out.

IU parking garages at Fee Lane near the Kelley School of Business, Sixth Street near the Poplars building and the Henderson Garage located between Third Street and Atwater Avenue will be open to the public. Fans can also park in the shuttle lot north of the Curry Pike and Ind. 46 intersection. The lot opens at 11 a.m. and a shuttle will begin taking fans to the stadium at 1 p.m. It will begin taking fans back to the lot during the fourth quarter until about 90 minutes after the game ends. Parking in the shuttle lot costs $20 for most vehicles and $50 for RVs and buses.

Police are increasing security procedures at the stadium gates because of a new clear-bag policy and walk-through metal detectors. There are exceptions for families with diaper bags or medical conditions requiring special equipment such as oxygen. Those fans must enter on the east and west sides of the stadium.

Since this is the first IU game where the clear-bag policy will be enforced, the university will have 40,000 clear plastic bags that meet specifications for entry. ROTC personnel will be in the lots outside the stadium, passing them out to people who need them.

Fans will also be asked to walk through a metal detector.
