Deer Cull Scheduled At Griffy Lake Nature Preserve

Last updated on Thursday, August 24, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Bloomington Board of Park Commissioners approved to allow sharpshooters to cull deer in Griffy Lake Nature Preserve on Tuesday night.

The cull is scheduled for Nov. 15 and Feb. 28.

City officials voted to contract with White Buffalo Inc. for up to $35,000 to remove up to 100 deer from the preserve. The contract also state is there is continuous disruption to the effort for more than 24 hours White Buffalo will be compensated. The city will pay White Buffalo $1,000 a day, up to a maximum of $5,000.

A deer cull was scheduled for 2015, but Parks administrator Mick Renneisen says with such a bountiful amount of natural food that year, the deer weren't lured to the bait sites White Buffalo had set up.

Since then the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Environmental Resources Advisory Council says the deer have done more damage to the plant species at the nature preserve.
