State Sen. Eric Koch To Serve On Military Base Planning Council
Last updated on Wednesday, July 19, 2017
(STATEHOUSE) - State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) has been appointed to serve on the Military Base Planning Council.
The council consists of members of the Indiana General Assembly whose districts include all or part of a county that contains any part of a military base, various state agency commissioners or their designees, and local government representatives from the counties in which military bases are located. Koch authored the legislation that created the Council in 2005 during the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process.
By law, the council is tasked to:
- Identify the public infrastructure and other community support necessary to improve mission efficiencies and for the development and expansion of military bases in Indiana.
- Identify existing and potential impacts of encroachment on military bases in Indiana.
- Identify potential state and local government actions that can minimize the impacts of encroachment on and enhance the long term potential of military bases.
- Identify opportunities for collaboration among the state, including the military department of the state, political subdivisions, military contractors and academic institutions to enhance the economic potential of military bases and the economic benefits of military bases to the state.
- Study how governmental entities outside Indiana have addressed issues regarding encroachment and partnership formation.
"Crane, Camp Atterbury, and Muscatatuck Urban Training Center are among our state's military and defense assets," Koch said. "The Council is a forum for communication, coordination, and information exchange to ensure our continued success in preserving and expanding Indiana's role in our national security and leveraging these assets for economic development."
