(STATEHOUSE) - State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) will serve on the Joint Committee on Judiciary and Public Policy during the summer and fall months to help prepare for the 2018 session of the General Assembly.

The joint committee consists of the members of the Senate Standing Committee on the Judiciary and the members of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Public Policy.

The committee has been assigned to study several handgun-related topics including:

  • Repeal of the law that requires a person to obtain a license to carry a handgun in Indiana, including the following:

  • The fiscal impact of a repeal of the handgun licensure law.

  • The issuance and use of reciprocity licenses.

  • Any persons who should be prohibited from possessing or carrying a handgun.

  • The rate in which handguns are used in suicides in Indiana.

  • The rate in which handguns are used in criminal acts in Indiana.

  • Reduction of firearms violence in Indiana, including requiring background checks to be conducted by all gun show vendors at gun shows in Indiana.

  • Increasing the number of law enforcement officers employed by local units of government in Indiana.

"Study committees give us the opportunity to take an in-depth look at important public policy issues," Koch said. "I look forward to the opportunity to review Indiana's current firearms laws and hear testimony on the proposed Constitutional Carry law."

When Indiana's part-time legislature is not in session, lawmakers serve on interim study committees that meet to review the state's top issues, as identified by the General Assembly during the prior legislative session.

Study committee topics are assigned by the bipartisan Legislative Council, comprised of 16 voting members -- eight from the Senate and eight from the House of Representatives.
