(STATEHOUSE) - State Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford) is backing efforts to improve all aspects of the state's food and agriculture system throughout the next decade under a new Indiana Agriculture Strategic Plan.

May said the strategic plan was developed by a committee consisting of influential agriculture leaders and representatives from agriculture boards, universities and both non-government and government organizations. The plan outlines the ways Indiana will expand contributions to the global industry, build a stronger workforce and enhance leadership in the field.

"Farming communities made up of hardworking Hoosiers are a powerful force in maintaining Indiana's strong economy," May said. "Expanding all aspects of Indiana agriculture is not only going to benefit many farmers in our area but will provide more opportunities to Hoosiers statewide and keep our agriculture industry competitive on the national level."

May said the plan addresses seven priorities that include economic and community development; natural resources stewardship and environment; education and career development; public relations and outreach; leadership development; infrastructure; and food and agricultural innovation.

"Currently, Indiana's agriculture industry contributes more than $30 billion to the economy and provides for nearly 245,000 jobs across the state," May said. "In our community alone there is around 500,000 acres of farmland, so the potential impact of this plan will be significant to our area."
