(BEDFORD) - Indiana Historic Pathways is sponsoring a workshop for teachers, interpreters, and other educators on the Buffalo Trace on Tuesday, October 10, from 9 am to 3 pm at the Dubois County Museum in Jasper.
The workshop will be focused on expanding ways to use the 70 educational boxes developed by the Buffalo Trace Task Force led by the Hoosier National Forest in 2016.
These boxes, which contain 15 interactive activities and 19 hands-on items related to the historic Buffalo Trace, were delivered to every public school along the Trace in 8 counties which have a fourth grade class. In addition, libraries or museums in each county were given a box to have on loan to other entities such as homeschools, parochial schools, parks, or camps that might want to use the boxes. There is also a box at the Hoosier National Forest office in Bedford.
A list of the sites where boxes are available is on the buffalo trace website at: buffalotrace.indianashistoricpathways.org/. The boxes are normally loaned out for two weeks. Contact your county library or museum, or the Bedford office of the Hoosier NF at (812) 275-5987, to borrow a buffalo trace box.
"We've gotten great feedback from teachers who have used the activities," said Teena Ligman, project coordinator for the buffalo trace boxes, "so now we're just hoping more teachers and educators will use them." Ligman said the boxes were a project for the Indiana Bicentennial and grant money from Indiana Humanities and the National Park Service helped make the project possible.
Now, the group is planning a workshop on October 10 to expand on the educational focus of the boxes. The workshop is made possible through a grant from Indiana Humanities. Ligman encourages educators to mark their calendar and reserve that date to attend the workshop.
At the workshop a new activity will be unveiled and a new item for the boxes will be distributed. They have an outstanding line-up of speakers including Dr. Cheryl Munson, archaeologist from Indiana University, to speak on Native American use of the Trace; Frank Doughman, Superintendent at the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, to talk about the military use of the Trace and the Indiana Rangers; David Ruckman to speak about early surveyors and how surveyors have located much of the trace on the ground today; an operating partner from Red Frazier Bison Ranch; a teacher panel discussing innovative uses of the activities; and Charles Moman to highlight his original music.
Ligman said registration information will be posted on the website at buffalotrace.indianashistoricpathways.org/. The workshop fee is $25 which includes lunch, handouts and take-home items. She said the committee planning the workshop is having a great time with door prizes and are excited about the speakers who have agreed to come. "We think it will be the kind of workshop that will inspire everyone to want to know more, and to share what they've learned, so we hope to fill the room to capacity!"
