City of Bloomington Utilities South Central Interceptor Sewer Project Progresses

Last updated on Thursday, July 13, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - Underground blasting will commence this week as City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) and its contractors continue work in the Switchyard Park area to construct the South Central Interceptor sewer.

B-Line trail users may have noticed large pipes lined up ready for installation and the paved detour.

The underground blasting will break up large rocks prior to digging the trench for the pipe. Since the blast is about 15 feet underground, people may hear a muffled boom and feel a vibration, but flying debris should not be present. Blasting will typically occur twice daily, between 11 a.m. and Noon and again between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., weather dependent. During these times, the B-Line trail will close for about 15 minutes near the Country Club Drive intersection.

"The infrastructure upgrades to the South Central Interceptor are part of ongoing improvements and will eliminate sanitary sewer overflows we have experienced in the area in the past," said CBU Director Vic Kelson. "This is critical support for the Switchyard Park and the increase in commerce we expect along this corridor in the coming years."
