(BLOOMINGTON) - Three Greenwood residents were killed Saturday in a multi-vehicle accident on North Business Ind. 37 near Bayles Road.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department confirms that the incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. and involved a Miller Transportation bus, a minivan and three other vehicles

Police say a Miller passenger bus was traveling southbound and struck the minivan, killing three of its occupants. Police say the bus was traveling at full speed in the construction zone and rammed into the stopped minivan causing a chain-reaction accident which completely smashed the minivan.

The minivan then struck a sedan, which struck a Jeep Wrangler, which then struck a red Mini Cooper, pushing the vehicle into a ditch about 50 feet from the scene of the accident.

Police say 54-year-old Rose Pettus, 30-year-old Shante Lewis and 30-year-old Orlando Lewis Jr., all from Greenwood, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A toddler, also in the van, was secured in a child-restraint and reportedly suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

A driver of one of the other four vehicles involved also was taken to the hospital with head injuries.

Miller Transportation released the following statement:

"A tragic accident occurred today [Saturday] involving several vehicles, including a Miller Transportation Bus. The bus was headed from Chicago to Louisville when the accident took place in Bloomington, IN.

Unfortunately, it appears there were fatalities as a result of this accident. We are greatly saddened for this loss of life and offer our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the families and all those impacted by this accident.

We pledge our assistance in cooperating with local authorities in the investigation."

Officials say the bus filled with passengers was on its way to Louisville with a planned stop in Bloomington.
