Last updated on Tuesday, July 25, 2017

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after police were called to a home at 118 Washboard Road after a domestic dispute.

Lawrence County Police arrested 83-year-old Billy Burnette of Bedford on charges of criminal recklessness and battery.

Police were called to the home after the caller reported that his wife's grandfather, Burnette, had shot a gun at his foot and hit him with a board.

According to Chief Deputy Aaron Shoults, when officers arrived the victim told police he and his wife had gone to the home to pick up the last of their property from the residence after being evicted.

"Mr. Burnette confronted the couple and words were exchanged about them getting the property and leaving," Chief Deputy Shoults added. "Mr. Burnette then pulled a gun and pointed it at the victim and told him to leave now. he then fired a shot at the victim's feet."

Burnette then allegedly picked up a board with a nail in it and chased the victim, hitting him on the left side of his body.

"The victim called police and Mr. Burnette left the property," Chief Deputy Shoults added. "Officers obtained statements from the victim and other witnesses and made contact with Mr. Burnette and he was arrested and transported to jail."
