Barrett And Workman Place First In 42nd Annual Bedford Limestone Classic 5K

Last updated on Saturday, July 15, 2017

(BEDFORD) - The 42nd running of the Bedford Limestone Classic 5K was Saturday.

The race started on 19th Street and ended with a lap around Parkview Intermediate School's track.

The proceeds of the Limestone Classic 5K directly benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County.

This year 144 runners participated.

Logan Barrett and Alli Workman were the first to cross the finish lines claiming victories.

Barrett took the men's title with a time of 15:32.7 shattering last years time.

Workman took the women's title with a time of 18:46.3, more than a minute faster than the second place finisher and defending champion Julie Riggins.

The kids race was close with Dan Leach 34:23.4 edging out Doug Kendall to cross the finish line first.

"The first year that the Limestone Run was put on I was in high school," says Dr. Jim Sowders, race director and long time supporter of the Boys and Girls Club. "And I volunteered for Maurie Ragsdale, co-founder of the race. So you can say I've been involved with it from the start."

The local club started the race, but in the late 90's the club disbanded and allowed the Girls Cub to take it over.

"I helped Mike Jarrard as co-race director for director for quite a few years and when Mike left the board of directors, I more or less became the race director," Sowders added.

The race is now what Sowders calls a "low-key fundraiser" for the Boys and Girls Club, giving them a little boosted revenue to help with club scholarships and other items.

"The running community loves this race and it has consistently been rated at the top of all the Mag 7 races," Sowders added. "The volunteers from our local runners take great pride in helping to keep it going and the race could not continue without their invaluable help. I'm privileged to be a part of this event and I hope it continues for another 42 years."
