Last updated on Friday, July 7, 2017

(MITCHELL) - The Galactic Gathering on July 15 will feature seven Indiana-born astronauts, Charlie Walker, Jerry Ross, Joe Allen, Tony England, Mark Brown, David Wolf and Kevin Ford.

All astronauts will take part in a breakfast at Spring Mill, a symposium at the Mitchell Opera House and a parade on Main Street. In addition, attendees can also get their picture taken with the astronauts at Mitchell First Baptist Church and take a tour of Gus Grissom's home.

"The Galactic Gathering is unique in the sense it is the first time in the state's history this many Hoosier born astronauts will take a stage at any location together," said Steve Grissom, assistant principal at Mitchell Junior High School.

Steve Grissom is Lieutenant Colonel Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom's third cousin.

Various events will be offered, for a cost, throughout the City of Mitchell to support the Grissom Boyhood Home.

There will be chances to interact with the astronauts, but tickets are running out. Tickets to the "Liftoff Breakfast" and "Indiana's Space Symposium" at the Mitchell Opera House in the evening are sold out.

Tickets are still available for tours of Gus Grissom Boyhood Home and photo opportunities. Tickets can be found at

The proceeds for this event go to the Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom Boyhood Home, which is dedicated to restore and preserve the history of the home Grissom was raised in.

There will also be various activities those attending can participate in at Spring Mill State Park for free, as this event will be held in conjunction with Gus Grissom Days' hosted by Spring Mill State Park.

Attendees to the event will receive free goodies at the event. But for the more adventurous people, posters will be available for purchase featuring all 12 Indiana-born astronauts, including the seven at the event and will have a chance to get the posters autographed.

"They are experts on not only space flight but astronomy, the exploration of space, engineering, and many other topics," said Grissom. "These men were in the mix of everything and their stories will shed light on the heroine adventures of manned spaceflight."

Gus' son, Mark and his brother, Lowell, will be at the Galactic Gathering.
