(MITCHELL) - Zachary Chastain, who is entering his senior year at Mitchell High School, will serve as a delegate to Hoosier Boys State planned this year for June 11-17. It will take place at Trine University in Angola.

Zachary is the son of Greg and Jill Chastain. He is sponsored by the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250, Mitchell.

The purpose of Hoosier Boys State is to teach through application and simulation.

According to the American Legion Department of Indiana, Hoosier Boys State is a hands-on experience in state and local politics and government.

Delegates to the weeklong event will learn about the organization and function of political activities in the election system. During the week, delegates will go from selecting a precinct committeeman to drawing up a platform, adopting caucus rules and selecting nominees for governor of Hoosier Boys State.

They will learn how government operates at city, county and state levels, as well as the duties of the office holders associated with each level.

The first day of the experience is dedicated to registration procedures. The second day focuses on the primary positions for city and county posts. Delegates will choose at least one office they would like to seek and will learn about that position. Also, the Election Board will be chosen for the Primary Election, which will take place on the following day. The next day then is devoted to the General Election.

On the next day, with all positions filled, the program turns into a politically functional system. Cities and counties turn their respective dormitories into actual cities with "functioning" businesses and offices. As examples of the kinds of activities in which participants are engaged, senators will meet and propose and vote on bills. In addition, the governor appoints positions and city council members propose ordinances for the mayor.

On the sixth and final day, elected officials will be tested on their knowledge of the position and what they have done in office.
