Last updated on Thursday, June 29, 2017

(HENRYVILLE) - Two children are dead and their mother was seriously injured after their car and a train collided in Henryville on Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 1:25 p.m. at State Road 160 and Pennsylvania Street.

According to Clark County Police Capt. Scottie Maples, officers have unanswered questions and continue to investigate what happened.

"The vehicle was traveling south on 160 and the CSX train was travelling North," he says. "The children were in the back seat. We don't know what happened. We are doing 3-D imaging and accident reconstruction to try and find out what happened. This is a very close-knit community and we are not releasing the names of those involved yet until the investigation is complete."

Police are unsure who or if anyone were wearing seat belts.

Police are not certain if the car stalled or the driver may have been trying to beat the train.

A witness told police that the warning lights were functioning and that they heard the train blow its horn, capt. Maples says.

This is the second accident at the tracks in a month. A Brinks truck and train crashed at the same crossing on June 5 around 1 p.m.. No one was injured in that collision.
