Last updated on Tuesday, June 27, 2017

(SULLIVAN) - Indiana Conservation Officers responded to a call of a man impersonating a conservation officer on Saturday at Sullivan Lake.

Police arrested 44-year-old Kevin L. Byerly, of Brazil on a charge of impersonating a police officer.

Witnesses told police Byerly approached four teenagers fishing at Sullivan Lake Saturday evening and identified himself as "Game Warden Services".

He requested fishing license information from the juveniles, and accused them of smoking marijuana.

When the parent of one of the teenagers approached, Byerly claimed he was the "Conservation Officer from Fairbanks Landing" and accused the teenagers of various crimes.

Byerly reportedly had a handgun exposed in his waistband throughout the incident.

A parent of one of the teenagers contacted the Sullivan Lake gatehouse after Byerly was observed following two teenage girls toward the restroom facilities.

Gatehouse employees then contacted law enforcement.

Byerly was located and taken into custody without further incident.

Sullivan County Sherriff's Department, Indiana State Police, Sullivan City Police Department, and Dugger Town Marshals assisted at the scene.
