Last updated on Thursday, June 1, 2017

(BEDFORD) - Walking Warriors are leading the way in donations for Relay for Life.

The 2017 Relay for Life event is scheduled for Saturday, at the Parkview track. Events will kick off at 4 p.m. The evening will be filled with entertainment, fun, food and fellowship.

The theme is "Tailgating for a Cure."

"It is really a community engagement opportunity to celebrate life and survivors," says Meagan Brown, Community Manager for the Lawrence County Relay for Life. "The radio station (Super Oldies 105.5 WQRK) will be out entertaining all day. We're going to have tailgate themed games."

The 5K Family Fun Run hosted by Hoosier Hills Credit Union will begin at 5 p.m. There will be face painting, candid photobooth, goody bags, 5k t-shirts, finishers' medals and special awards.

So far, Relay teams have raised $29,965 toward a goal of $45,000 this year in a "quest for a cure" for the American Cancer Society.

"I don't see Lawrence County not making this goal. We have so many caring people," Brown added.

Sharon Brock's team, the Walking Warriors, is leading the way with more than $19,640 in donations.

Other teams:

Luminarias honor every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who's overcome it. When you attend a Relay event, you'll see the Luminarias decorated with names and sometimes messages to the people they're dedicated to. After dark, Relay participants share an emotional moment when each Luminaria is lit in remembrance of a life touched by cancer. Together, we take a moment of silence to remember the loved ones they're dedicated to. When you make a donation for a Luminaria it helps fund the American Cancer Society's mission to help save lives.
