Orleans Woman Suffers Facial Injures After Crashing Pickup Into Ditch

Last updated on Wednesday, June 7, 2017

(MITCHELL) - An Orleans woman suffered a laceration to her chin and bruising to her arm after she crashed her pickup truck in a ditch in the 3910 block of State Road 60 East Saturday afternoon.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 46-year-old Christina Higdon drove a 2007 Mitsubishi Raider in the left travel lane, went into the ditch and struck a mail box near the north side of the highway near Edwards Lane.

Police say there was an odor of alcoholic beverages in the pickup.

The officers says Higdon failed a horizontal gaze nystagmustest test. It's a test for high blood alcohol content and is based on a quirk in human biology. An involuntary twitch (referred to as Nystagmus) occurs whenever a person looks sideways at an angle greater than 45 degrees (triggering peripheral vision). However, people with a high blood alcohol content twitch when the light is held at less than 45 degrees.

She was taken to a local hospital for treatment and a blood-draw. Those results are pending.

She was cited for not wearing her seat belt and driving without ever having a driver's license.
