Man Involved In Standoff Found Dead In Jail Cell

Last updated on Monday, June 5, 2017

(DUBOIS CO.) - A man who kept police at bay for six hours in a Thursday night standoff in Dubois County was found dead in his cell Friday morning.

Police say 33-year-old Armando Gutierrez was booked into the Dubois County Security Center at 2:02 a.m. Friday after being checked out of the hospital.

On routine rounds, an officer found him unresponsive just before 6 a.m. Officials administered CPR until the ambulance crew arrived on the scene. He was taken to Memorial Hospital in Jasper were Gutierrez was pronounced dead at 8:08 a.m. Friday morning.

Both the sheriff's office and the county coroner are investigating the case. An autopsy was performed on Sunday to determine cause of death.

According to an Indiana State Police report, Gutierrez was arrested safely after a standoff that lasted from 4:45 p.m. to about 11 p.m. Thursday.

US Marshals were serving a Vanderbugh County domestic battery warrant at a Clay Street home in Jasper when Gutierrez barricaded himself in a crawl space in the basement with a handgun.

Court records indicate that the charges against Gutierrez stem from an alleged May 27 incident, and the warrant for his arrest was issued on Wednesday. He faces charges of domestic battery with a deadly weapon, illegal possession of a handgun by a felon, auto theft, theft and theft of a firearm, according to court records.

He fired one round during the incident, but police say they believed it was not fired at officers.

Officers used less-lethal weapons to deescalate the situation and Gutierrez was apprehended and taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation. Once cleared at the hospital he was transported to the Dubois County Security Center.

His death is under investigation and the toxicology and autopsy results are pending.
