Family Of Three Found Shot To Death

Last updated on Wednesday, June 7, 2017

(WASHINGTON CO.) - A father, mother and their son were found shot dead Sunday afternoon in their home at 5582 South Beck’s Mill Road, east of Salem.

Police say 56-year-old Danny G. Newlin and a 14-year-old died from multiple gunshot wounds; 41-year-old Kelly Kay Newlin was shot once.

Police discovered the murders around 4 p.m. after they were requested to do a welfare check after a caller from another state contacted police saying the family might be in danger.

Police then began to search for 47-year-old Richard Lee Burton Jr. Police say Burton was living with the family and evidence found at the scene indicated he was the person involved in the killings.

On Monday morning shortly after 8 a.m., the Monroe County Sheriff's Department received a tip that Burton's Dodge Ram pickup was parked at the Blackwell Horse Camp in Monroe County near State Road 446.

When deputies approached the vehicle they found Burton dead in the cab from a self-inflected gunshot wound.

Police have not released what type of gun was used, whether or not it was the same gun used by Burton to kill himself or where the bodies were found in the home.

Police say no further information on the incident will be released.
