Last updated on Monday, June 19, 2017

(BEDFORD) - Bids will be open for the downtown StoneGate Arts & Education Center today during a meeting of the Bedford Board of Works.

StoneGate, a Stellar Communities project will replace the former JC Penney building at the corner of 15th and J streets and will provide a downtown location for job training, degree work and professional training in collaborative partnerships with Oakland City University, Ivy Tech, Radius Indiana, West Gate Academy and North Lawrence Career Center.

The city initially planned to renovate the Penney building but that plan was scrapped when bids came in more than a million dollars over budget. The city decided to proceed with the project but instead build a new facility.

The estimated cost of the project is $4.2 million with construction beginning in August with completion in 2018.

Construction will be funded by a loan from the United States Department of Agriculture, an estimated $1.5 million from the Office of Community and Rural Affairs, the Bedford Urban Enterprise Association dedicate $100,000 toward the project and City of Bedford contributed $649,531. In 2016, the Bedford Redevelopment Commission approved a $2.5 million bond in support of the project.
