City Of Mitchell To Hold Firework Display During Labor Day Weekend

Last updated on Wednesday, June 7, 2017

(MITCHELL) - The City of Mitchell will not have fireworks during the Fourth of July holiday.

Last year the holiday fire works were moved to the Labor Day weekend after thunderstorms hit the area. Officials say that worked so well they will once again hold them in September.

Mayor JD England told the Times Mail that the Labor Day display brought a huge crowd to Mitchell and was good for the city and businesses.

England says thousands flocked to Mitchell because few, if any set off fireworks over the Labor Day weekend.

The fireworks will take place at dark on September 3 at Lehigh Field. The rain date for the show is September 4.

The City's annual fireworks show is funded completely by donations. Funds are always accepted for the shows and can be mailed to Mitchell City Hall, Attn: Fireworks Fund, 407 S. Sixth St., Mitchell, IN 47446.

Mayor England hopes to raise enough funds to possibly have a firework display at the end of the Persimmon Festival.

Officials will evaluate how this year's show goes and then determine if this will a permanent event for Mitchell.
