(BIRDSEYE) - A Birdseye man won his division at the American Drug Free Powerlifting Federation National Competition. He also broke the federation’s world record squat in his weight class Sunday in Missouri.
He is headed to the world championship in November.
The five-foot-five-inch 216-pound Jason St. Clair powerlifter squatted 614 pounds.
The process of clearing this lift, or any of the three lifts at the competition, is regulated by the judges. The judges give the commands to ensure the lift is conducted correctly and safely.
St. Clair has been lifting weights since he was 13, but didn't start doing powerlifting until four years ago. He credits his wins to his family, friends and girlfriend Sarah LaMarche and years of training at The Gym in Ferdinand.
Powerlifting competitions are scored by the total weight lifted with the proper form in three different lifts; bench press, squat and deadlift. The cumulative weight lifted by St. Clair was just under 1,600 pounds.
