(SALEM) - Officials have identified around 50 homes and businesses that were hit by flash flooding in Salem where damages and costs could reach $10 million.

Semitrailers and cars were swept into a downtown Salem riverbed when about 6 inches of rain quickly fell May 19, 2017.

Salem community development Greg Fitzloff says that the Blue River rose by 14 feet and that some businesses lost all of their inventory as up to 7 feet of water entered some buildings. Fitzloff says officials aren't certain whether some damaged buildings can be saved.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb has requested federal approval of low-interest disaster loans for residents and businesses in the Salem area.
