Washington County Teen In Serious Condition After Being Shot

(PEKIN) - A 16-year-old Pekin boy is in serious condition after he was shot on Tuesday afternoon.

According to ISP Sgt. Jerry D. Goodin, 16-year-old John Levi Bird was shot by another juvenile after the teens found a gun in a barn near 10825 Honey Run Road in the Pekin area.

Police say the juvenile picked up the weapon and pointed it at Bird and fired.

Bird was taken by personal vehicle to St. Vincent Hospital in Salem and then transported by medical helicopter to the University of Louisville Hospital with life threatening injuries from the gunshot wound.

The juvenile that fired the weapon, who is also from Pekin, was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center on a charge of juvenile delinquency.

The incident remains under investigation and no other information will be released at this time.

Officers from the New Pekin Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff's Department assisted Indiana State Police Detectives and Indiana State Police Crime Scene Technicians.
