(HURON) - The quick reaction of firefighters from both Huron and Marion Volunteer Fire Departments allowed them to save a garage from being consumed by fire Monday night.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 74 Huron Williams Road at 10:46 p.m. after a neighbor noticed the blaze.

"The neighbor then alerted the residents Dale and Penny Jones, who got out of the house," says Huron VFD Chief Bill Kinder. "The garage is located about 75 feet from the house."

Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the blaze.

"We got it out fast and were able to save the garage and most of the contents," Chief Kinder added. "Most of the times when you get a call of a passerby noticing the blaze it is too late and it turns into a total lost because the fire has normally been burning for a while before someone noticed it."

Firefighters were able to save the garage and contents including a deep freezer that the family had just stocked, mowers, chain saws and other equipment.

Chief Kinder estimates damages between $1,500 to $2,000.

"The building is still under roof," he added. "The fire went through a side wall, but it is worth fixing."

The fire is currently listed as undetermined.

"I believe it was electrical in nature," Chief Kinder added. "They were having trouble with an electrical breaker tripping two or three times that day."

Penny Jones, who suffers from COPD and is on oxygen, was having trouble breathing when firefighters arrived.

"She suffered some smoke inhalation. Our medical first responders got her on oxygen right away and had her breathing under control before the ambulance crew arrived," Chief Kinder added.

Jones was transported by an AMR ambulance crew to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.
