Last updated on Tuesday, May 23, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - IU Health Bloomington Hospital has developed a strong donor program ensuring all patients have the opportunity to become donors. That effort has been recognized by VisionFirst, the Indiana Lions Eye Bank.

Last month, the organization awarded the "Vision" award to the regional facility, noting that nursing team in the hospital recognizes the impact donors can have on others, bringing something positive to families suffering a loss of a loved one.

In 2016, IU Health Bloomignton was responsible for making a difference in the lives of more than 100 individuals through the gift of sight. In six years, that total has been 480 people impacted with cornea transplants.

"We are honored to present this award to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for their continued improvement, the dedication to their families and commitment to helping restore vision through corneal transplants," says Alex Van Zant, director of professional services for VisionFirst.

VisionFirst is a non-profit organization founded by the Lions of Indiana in 1959, headquartered in Indianapolis. It shares the gift of sight with thousands of individuals suffering from vision impairment. As one of the nation's leading eye banks, VisionFirst works with corneal surgeons around the world.
