(SALEM) - Salem Community Development Director Greg Fitzloff says paperwork has been signed and turned in from local officials to the State of Indiana to begin processing so Governor Eric Holcomb can declare Salem as a disaster area.
Mayor Troy Merry, State Representative Steve Davisson and Indiana Senator Erin Houchin and US Representative Trey Hollingsworth and Jason Cockerill were in Salem over the weekend to assess the damage.
Fitzloff say local businesses and residents who were affected by Friday's flooding should first contact their insurance companies. For those who didn't have insurance or who did not have flood insurance, once the state signs the paperwork state and federal aid agencies will begin to take a look at property and see what they can offer in funding. The Department of Homeland Security is working with the Small Business Administration to give assistance.
Devastation was limited to mainly businesses but some homes were also affected.
El Camion, Miller Hardware and Salem Lumber both were flooded and lost most of their inventory. Businesses on Water Street found at least six feet of water inside their buildings.
On Saturday, many businesses owners were able to get inside of the buildings and spent the day shoveling out mud and assessing the damages.
