Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department Holding Open House At New Fire Station

Last updated on Thursday, May 4, 2017

(BEDFORD) - The Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department is holding an open house to show off their new fire station on Sunny Acres Drive.

The event will be held from Noon until 4 p.m., on May 20th at the fire station located at 1327 Sunny Acres Drive.

A Indiana Volunteer Firefighter Association ceremony will be held at 1 p.m.

State Flight medical helicopter will be on scene and there will be kid-friendly activities including the smoke house for them to crawl through.

There will also be live music and free food.

According to Shawswick Township trustee Millard Jones, the new station replaced the main fire station, which had outlived its use. The old building was built in 1974.

The new fire station cost $420,000 to complete.

The board used $100,000 of their CUM Fund the fire department invested $20,000 and the board borrowed $300,000 from the bank at 2.57 percent interest and will have the building paid off in six years. The monthly payments will be paid from the CUM Fund.

Jones stressed the new department is a plus for the community and will not raise taxes and will benefit the township with lower fire ratings in the future - the better the rating, the lower homeowners insurance rates are.

Neidigh Construction Inc. in Bloomington constructed the building.

Firefighter Bob Brown says the new fire station was needed because the old building was falling apart and not feasible to repair. The roof was leaking and falling apart and there was mold in the building.

The new building has five bays for trucks, a meeting room, kitchen, a few offices, rest rooms and storage areas.
