Shawswick VFD To Take Over Fire Protection For Guthrie Township

Last updated on Wednesday, May 3, 2017

(GUTHRIE) - Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department will provide fire protection for Guthrie Township.

On November 28, there was a meeting between the Guthrie Township Trustee and Guthrie Township Volunteer Fire Department board members to address some concerns from citizens on response to local fire calls.

At that time the Trustee and Board were made aware that there were simply not enough personnel on the department to respond to many of the calls, thus neighboring volunteer fire departments were stepping up when necessary.

"Between November 2016 and April 2017 the Guthrie Fire Department personnel's numbers dropped even lower making it necessary to pursue an alternative option," says Bob Awbrey, Guthrie Township Trustee in an email. "State law requires all township trustees to provide fire protection for their township under IC36-8."

On March 25th there was a meeting between Guthrie Township Trustee Bob Awbrey, Trustee Board members and Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department board members and Shawswick Township trustee Millard Jones, to discuss a contract for Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department to provide fire protection for Guthrie Township. A contract was drawn up and checked by the law firm of Steel and Steel.

On April 24th, a contract was signed between Guthrie Township and Shawswick Township in accordance to IC36-8-13-3.

Beginning May 17th, Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department will also have full access to both fire buildings in Guthrie Township.

"The Guthrie Township Trustee and board would like to thank Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department and Trustee Millard Jones for graciously and professionally working with us on this matter," Awbrey says.
