Last updated on Thursday, May 18, 2017

(CRANE) - Department of the Navy leaders will host a ribbon cutting ceremony today to celebrate the beginning of commercial operations for the solar facility located on Naval Support Activity Crane.

The Department of the Navy is pleased to work with Duke Energy on this project to incorporate alternative energy initiatives in the local area.

The plant comprises approximately 76,000 solar panels, spanning roughly 145 acres. This solar facility will have a potential capacity of 24 megawatts direct current, or 17 megawatts alternating current. When operating at full capacity, the solar power plant can provide electricity for more than 2,700 average-size homes.

This project will contribute to the Department of the Navy's diverse energy portfolio, ensuring more secure and resilient operations at Naval Support Activity Crane.

The ceremony will be held today at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to feature remarks by Suzanne Crouch, Lieutenant Governor of Indiana; Melody Birmingham-Byrd, Indiana President, Duke Energy; and John Kliem, executive director of the Department of the Navy's Resilient Energy Program Office.
