(BLOOMINGTON) - More than 80 people came together in the first week of May to discuss the progress, to date, on making Bloomington and other South Central Region businesses what is termed: Dementia Friendly. The initiative was started in 2016.

The designation as a Dementia Friendly community by Dementia Friendly America, recognizes Bloomington and surrounding areas as being proactive in improving the quality of life for those with dementia, as well as their caregivers.

Mayor John Hamilton recognized the effort on May 4, proclaiming the day as Dementia Awareness Day in the city and shared inspiring words in support of the effort.

The purple angel logo, developed specifically for businesses to post in their windows, will be shared with all qualifying businesses. Currently, eight local businesses have embraced the program, with some mandating that 100 percent of their employees be trained in assisting dementia customers.

Amanda Mosier, Community Health Coordinator for the IU Health Alzheimer's Resource Service said she has seen great progress on creating a culture of acceptance and support in this area.

"Our community is helping to create an environment with less isolation and more participation. Dementia Friendly, in itself, means we're more educated and aware of the struggles that the person living with dementia and their caregivers are going through. It helps to create a better experience for everyone," Mosier said.
